"Inside a warehouse in Chicago’s Douglass Park, a group of women has been learning a new skillset for the last six weeks, part of Chicago Women in the Trades -- an initiative to encourage increased interest to the trades.

CWIT helped to place 181 women last year in construction, manufacturning, and apprenticeship programs. Of that number the organization said 81 women graduated from the programs here and it was all free.

“For all the women out there that have a little inkling of wanted to be in the trades they can absolutely do it,” said Aisha Brundidge.

Brundidge made the switch from healthcare and graduated from Women Build Illinois, a construction training program. She’s now a first year apprentice for an electrical workers union."

"Solidarity, strength and sisterhood were on full display as nearly 4,000 tradeswomen — including almost 400 #IBEW members — descended on Washington, D.C., for the 13th annual Tradeswomen Build Nations conference.

"It's my favorite conference that I go to," said Vancouver, British Columbia, Local 213 apprentice Michelle Abdallah. "This is the one that fills my cup for the rest of the year."

For a group of workers who often find themselves the only woman on a jobsite, attending a conference filled with thousands of women who work in the trades is a powerful experience, whether they are apprentices or seasoned journeywomen.

"These events are important because it gives all sisters in the trades a sense of belonging and a reminder that they are supported," said Jennifer Gray, director of the IBEW Civic and Community Engagement Department. "There is tremendous value in our sisters and siblings telling their story, and hearing others' stories, that a job in the trades can truly change the trajectory of someone's life."

Congratulations to #IBEW Local 1 in St. Louis for earning an Innovation in Philanthropy award from the St. Louis Business Journal!

“The partnership between IBEW/NECA Electrical Connection and Rebuilding Together St. Louis was initiated 20 years ago to eliminate hazards in low-income homes, where aging electrical infrastructure and faulty wiring posed a risk to homeowners,” officials said. “Over the years, the partnership has encountered hazards like exposed wiring, open splices, overloaded panel boxes and a lack of ground fault circuit interrupter switches and outlets.”

The Electrical Connection has donated more than $2.3 million in labor and materials to improve more than 585 homes for St. Louis-area homeowners through its partnership with Rebuilding Together, a social services organization that has provided free home repairs for more than 30 years. More than 100 electricians and 20 electrical contractors fan out on a Saturday morning every spring to repair homes. The partnership pays for all of the materials and the labor is donated.

"The number of major strikes jumped 43% to 33 in 2023, according to the official Labor Department count, the biggest number of large work stoppages in America in more than 20 years.

There were 462,000 workers who were on strike at some point in 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report, and there were 16.7 million days of work lost when the number of strikers and the length of the strikes are taken into account. That’s up from only 127,000 strikers who were off the job for a total of 2.2 million days in 2022."

Check out the excellent op-ed by #IBEW Local 490 member Nicholas Lydon at the link in our bio about why "right-to-work" legislation is just plain wrong.

"The real question that needs to be asked at this point would be, with a housing crisis in full swing, the issues we face with homelessness and drug addiction, is fighting a 75-year-old imaginary battle the most useful endeavor for our lawmakers to be on? And when our state is already pushing forward with the lowest poverty of all 50 states, do we need this unnecessary bill? I would urge everyone to reach out to your representatives and tell them to keep New Hampshire truly free and allow those who want to be in unions to remain in them, without being attacked by legislation like this that isn’t designed to help, but just to hurt a very specific group of people."

#IBEW Local 48 in Portland, OR, hosted acting labor secretary Julie Su to talk about diversifying the trades.

The federal government recently awarded a $1.25 million grant to Oregon Tradeswomen, a local organization that offers women a pathway to a career in the electrical trades.

Oregon Tradeswomen Executive Director Donna Hammond — who started as an electrical apprentice with IBEW in 1978 — said the grant will allow 200 low-income women an opportunity for a pre-apprenticeship program free of cost.

Hammond said it will create a pipeline of new journey-level electricians, who have completed apprenticeship and are able to work without supervision.

Tonya Hicks became the first woman electrician of #IBEW Local 917, as well as Mississippi’s first certified Black woman journeyman.

Today, in addition to being CEO of Power Solutions, she is running the career-training agency Women Do Everything, which she established in 2015 to help women break into well-paying, male-dominated industries.

“Women need equitable career and job opportunities that pay a livable wage, benefits that support women’s health, and access to affordable housing,” Hicks said in a statement on the agency’s website, which notes that only 2.4% of electricians in the United States are women.

Electricians are directly involved in EV charger installation, pre-wiring, and electrical upgrades, as well as maintaining and repairing EV chargers. As EV sales continue to increase, so does the need for charging stations in residential and commercial settings, and so does the demand for electricians. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects nearly 80,000 openings for electricians each year through 2030.

#IBEW locals like Local 103 in MA are already ahead of the curve, with programs like 103's Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program, which helps electricians gain a comprehensive understanding of the EV charging installation process.

More examples of what happens when antiunion politicians run states. Tens of thousands of Florida public sector workers from teachers and librarians to groundskeepers and electricians are losing their unions--and the wages, benefits, and working conditions guaranteed by their collective bargaining agreements.

“The work conditions of hundreds of thousands of people are going to be up in the air,” said Rich Templin, the director of politics and public policy for the AFL-CIO Florida. “That’s real lives. That’s not politics. That’s not pro-union, anti-union — it’s none of that. People’s lives are going to be upended.”

Solidarity with our #IBEW siblings in Local 46 at the Port of Seattle fighting for a fair contract!

"Port Electricians are essential workers who come to work in-person, every day, 24/7 — including during COVID — to keep the Port operating safely and efficiently. They install and maintain critical electrical and life-safety systems that include high voltage power generation and distribution, conveyor and cargo handling, airport runway lighting, wastewater treatment, load bridges, trains, fire alarm, security, power on piers and docks, lighting, and EV stations. They complete rigorous union apprenticeships, are subject to strict licensing requirements, and bring years of experience and expertise to the Port of Seattle.

But Port Electricians are the only licensed building trades group at the Port that does not have their wages and benefits tied to what is received by Union Electricians in Area Trade Agreements. That means the Port is paying highly skilled, licensed electricians at apprentice-level wages."

Unions and working families in Michigan celebrated Feb. 13 as the state’s repeal of its so-called right-to-work law went into effect.

The Michigan General Assembly voted to repeal and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the bill in March 2023.

Michigan was the first state in nearly 60 years to repeal such a law, which weakens unions by allowing workers to reap the benefits of a collectively bargained contract without contributing to the cost of its negotiation and enforcement.

“Killing Michigan’s right-to-work law was a highlight of a terrific year for the #IBEW and all of labor,” International President Kenneth W. Cooper said. “Working people in Michigan today are better protected on the job and empowered to negotiate even better pay and benefits because right-to-work is gone.”

"As the president of El Paso, Texas, Local 960, Rene Ortega has been ushering in a lot of changes. The union is more active in the community, and it even won a ballot initiative in 2022 that was crucial to its members. But the one thing he might be most proud of is organizing his mom.

Local 960 President Rene Ortega swore in new members on Nov. 2, including his mother Norah and her fellow streetlight analysts.

"None of this would have been possible without her," said Ortega, who's been a lineman with El Paso Electric for nine years and also got his nephew to join the trade. "She's the reason I'm in the company. She put me on the right path, and now I can repay her with representation."

There's some solid advice for anyone interested in becoming an electrician in this article.

“The first piece of advice that I would give is that it is completely OK if you don’t have any prior experience,” says Stephan Cole, corporate field trainer with Rosendin, a nationwide electrical contractor with headquarters in San Jose, California. “Start by enrolling in a registered apprenticeship program. From there you can learn about the role of an electrician and gain hands-on experience. A great place to start when looking for an apprenticeship is to look for the local International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (#IBEW) office in your area.”

"Atlanta, the urban capital of America’s Civil Rights movement and the birthplace of IBEW’s Electrical Workers Minority Caucus, played host to a convention this month to celebrate achievements in diversity and push for greater inclusion in the trades.

"At a meeting last year, IBEW International President Kenneth Cooper presented a challenge: to increase the union membership from 775,000 to 1 million across the United States and Canada.

The EWMC’s role in that effort was evident at the January conference.

“We’ve always traditionally helped people that were interested in the program to get prepared through tutoring or just mentorship,” #IBEW Local 11 EMWC President Alton Wilkerson said. “There are multiple ways that we try to help people in the community who want to join the IBEW.”

Congratulations to our December 2023 Apprentice of the Month, Marissa Smith!

“Before the apprenticeship, I was doing agricultural stuff. My family raises show goats; we’re a small family-run operation. I lived in Illinois for a couple of years doing an internship with one of the top goat breeders. It was totally different!

“But my dad is an electrician, and he kept trying to talk my brothers and me into the trades. I did a couple of summer helps with him and saw that I could do it too.

“I didn’t realize how much I actually enjoy building things and coming up with solutions. Being an apprentice and working in the field, you’re constantly learning. Everything’s constantly changing, so you’re never going to stop learning.

“The coolest thing about being in this local is that you can be on one job site for a few months, then not see someone for a couple of years. Then all of a sudden, you see them again and remember them from another job. It’s just so cool to see people reminisce on old jobs."

"Even though he retired in 2010, Gary McDowell has stayed deeply connected to the union that was a major part of his life from the time he transferred his IBEW card from Local 134 in Chicago to Local 332 in 1974. He has been serving as president of the Local 332 retirees’ club since 2011.

Gary’s long career began as a Navy electrician and took him through newspapers (the Chicago Tribune and the San Jose Mercury News) to the City of San Jose, where he was a maintenance electrician for 15 years, to several different contractors. Eventually he started teaching at the JATC (now ETASV).

"Gary’s advice for active members: “You can’t always count on working every day. Put something aside for tomorrow. Create longevity. Get to work on time. Give it your best shot. Don’t count on the other guy to do it for you.”

Congratulations to our November 2023 Apprentice of the Month, David White!

“I was always fascinated by how things operated, and how things all come together. My dad was a sprinkler fitter and said it was taxing on the body. He said electricians do well, and it’s a lot easier physically. When I was living with my parents, we had a neighbor who was a general foreman with Local 332, which got me interested in 332.

“I got my associate’s degree from Chabot College; that’s when I applied for the Local 332 apprenticeship. I got in on my first time, passed my test, scored well on my interview, and joined the apprenticeship in April 2019.

“Underground, the end of the job, trim, putting on covers, running conduit – it’s all interesting to me. Single line interests me the most.

“Family is really important in my life. I have a little brother who’s an athlete. I asked him one day, ‘If there was something else you might want to do, what would it be?’ He said he’d want to be an electrician like me. I’m his hero. I’m trying to make him proud.”

Shout-out to our #IBEW siblings at Schneider Electric in Oxford, OH, who pushed for and won temporary double-time pay for overtime work to meet demand fairly.

"The agreement put more money into Local 2287 members' pockets in time for the holiday season. It also allowed Schneider to meet the increased demand for products constructed at the facility and time to hire more staff. The company might even add a third shift, Fourth District International Representative Chad Donathan said.

Congratulations to our October 2023 Apprentice of the Month, Johnah Mondragon!

“What I like most about Local 332 is the camaraderie. People just want everyone around
them to be successful. Everybody is supportive.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity I got with the apprenticeship. Looking back to when I had my first son, I was only 20. It was difficult. I’m grateful to be able to support my family. I have an eight-year-old son, a four-year-old son about to turn five, and a daughter who’s almost a year and a half. I was worried when I got pregnant that I’d be required to take leave. But they were super accommodating to me at work and school.

“I’d like to tell women: We’re resilient. I’m a mom of three, and I commute 100 miles each way. We can do anything we put our minds to.”

Congratulations to Local 332's September 2023 Apprentice of the Month Serafin Lopez!

“Before I started the inside apprenticeship, I graduated from the residential program as the top apprentice.

“But even before that, I was a manager for a storage facility. Becoming an electrician was something I’ve always wanted to do. We were in a recession when I graduated from high school in 2008, and the local wasn’t hiring. I did my own thing and forgot about it. Then I decided to apply and got in.

“My favorite things about the job are the education and the pride in your work. You’ve got foremen out there going out of their way to teach you on the job, as well as the instructors themselves. They help you out when you ask questions. You’ve always got someone there to help. You’re never left alone.

“What I like best about 332 is the family and the respect. Everyone looks out for each other. Not having to ask for a raise is another thing. You go to work, put your time in, and it’s a give-give relationship. They’re not just asking you for stuff; you’re rewarded for it too. It’s a great work environment; I enjoy it.

“I eventually want to run work and become a foreman. That’s my goal. Maybe even a superintendent; we’ll see where it goes.”

"Any #IBEW Local 332 member who has been around a while has met – or at least heard of – Semyon Solomon – or Sem as most of us know him. Even though he’s been retired from the trade since October 2004, he didn’t disappear to a faraway island in the sun. Instead, he started teaching CAD at the JATC (now ETASV) – and stayed for 15 years, until the pandemic hit. And even since then, you’ll find him with tools in hand.

“To this day, if I have to fix something in the house, I get a little buzz in my head. I enjoy working with the tools. I enjoy the trade. It’s what I was cut out to be.”

Sem started his apprenticeship in 1962, became a journeyman in 1967, and got more involved with the local in 1968 – a decision that led him to two terms as recording secretary (starting in 1975), one term as vice president (1981-84) and three terms as president (1984-1993). He’s seen a lot of change over the past 61 years."

From Local 332 President Pete Seaberg: "2024 is looking to be busier than 2023, with more large T.I. projects, residential developments, and data centers starting over the next several months.

Throughout 2023, we had numerous member events, many with record levels of participation and interest. We will continue hosting these events for our members. I feel it is important to gather with our brothers and sisters as much as possible outside of work and meetings. These activities only bring us all closer together, and in turn, make us a stronger union.

Our training center, the ETASV, is thriving with a strong apprenticeship and a growing number of classes for journeyman upgrade training. These three pillars of strength: robust work picture, engaged and energetic membership, and substantial training program, will continue to hold up our local as one of the best in the IBEW. With the membership’s continued support and effort, we will advance our local’s contracts and reap the pay and benefits we all deserve."

Congratulations to Local 332's August 2023 Apprentice of the Month Joseph Dunnam!

“I’m the first generation in the electrical trades in my family, though I have some family members who were in the local operators union.

“Before I started the 332 apprenticeship, I worked in retail for about 15 years. I wanted to get into the trades and leaned toward electrical. I went through Working Partnerships USA’s Trades Orientation Program. As I was going through that program, it sparked my interest in a couple of other trades, but electrical was always #1 choice. I worked as a material handler for a little while, then as a sheet metal worker at Local 104, before I got into the apprenticeship here.

“I enjoyed working on the Nvidia project in Redwood City. It was fun doing the lighting there – both the actual process for the lighting controls but also all the special lighting they had in that building.

“I like the camaraderie of Local 332. I like the fact that we’re able to take care of each other, and that allows us to take care of our families.”

From Local 332 Business Manager Javier Casillas:
"Roughly 6 months into my tenure as business manager, two contracts are complete. The S&C negotiations were a record deal at $16.50 over four years with solid language updates that were long overdue. Now they have an established week, employers are penalized if they do not pay on time, and all 332 members are now on the same pay schedule.

What is ahead for 332 in ’24? Negotiations, negotiations, and more negotiations! We will be working on the inside, residential, material handlers, and City of San Jose electricians. We are the largest inside local in Northern California, and I firmly believe our membership is the best in the Bay. "An innovative program is changing the face of what's typically a male-dominated industry. Philadelphia #IBEW Local 98 is graduating nine high school girls into careers as union electricians.

It's the union's second graduating class from the "Rosie's Girls" program, which provides local high school girls with a basic introduction to a career in the unionized electrical industry. Graduates of the Rosie's Girls program are automatically qualified to apply for an IBEW Local 98 Apprenticeship.

"Traditionally women are told the construction industry isn't for them. We get over 1,000 applicants a year. We only get a handful of women. Clean energy is guaranteeing lots of work for new electricians and those willing to learn new skills. The #IBEW Local 134 Chicago training center is paving the way for great #union electrician careers in solar and wind.

Electrical apprentice Jeremy Schanck said installing solar panels is a job his father, an electrician of 30 years, asked him, a rookie, about.

"It's actually pretty nice seeing he taught me all this stuff when I was a little kid and now that I'm here, I'm going to be able to teach him stuff that he's never got the chance to learn," Schanck said.

Most #union electricians come in through an apprenticeship. In Northern Ohio, an agreement between the #IBEW and NECA paved the way for an alternate route for journeyman status.

“I never did the apprenticeship program. I wanted to, but it just didn’t work out. Then, I had kids and didn’t have the time to dedicate to it. So I took the longer route as a construction wireman and worked my way up,” Eric Clayton said.

The #IBEW leads the way in renewable energy yet again, signing a project labor agreement to build the SunZia transmission line across Arizona and New Mexico.

The $1.4 billion, 580-mile 525-volt HVDC transmission line is said to be the largest clean energy infrastructure project in North American history.

“The men and women of the IBEW are proud to partner with Pattern Energy and Quanta Services, Inc. on this historic energy infrastructure project. SunZia won’t just slash carbon emissions, but create good, middle class jobs throughout the region, and this transmission PLA guarantees that,” said IBEW International President Kenneth W. Cooper. “More good-paying, union jobs will create an economic ripple effect throughout Arizona and New Mexico, pouring money back into local communities."
