San Jose City College Labor Studies Fall 2009 Classes
Although one class is already underway (at the time of this page), there are more classes scheduled to start. Here are the names, dates, and information necessary to get in.
Labor 031 - Survey of Contemporary Labor/Social Issues - J. Kelly - Th. 10/8 - 11/5 6:00 - 9:45 pm How does the mass media frame issues and influence strategies to promote or reverse social change? What re the latest developments and issues effecting community activism? The impact of the economic meltdown, budget deficits and bailouts, Green jobs, health care and immigration reforms and other social justice challenges will be discussed.
Labor 025 - Labor Organizing/Political Action - B. Brownstein - Th. 11/12 - 12/17 6:15 - 9:40 pm The focus is on local Santa Clara County political contests, initiatives and resoltuions, as well as analyzing the changes in the political landscape of Silicon Valley. A leading strategist for organized labor, Instructor, Bob Brownstein served as budget advisor for former San Jose Mayor Susan Hammer and is the Policy Director or Working Partnerships USA, the think tank for the South Bay Labor Council.
Labor 022 - Labor Negotiations/Dispute Resolution - L. Rocha - 11/16, 18, 21, & 23 - Odd Hours Seminar particpants engage in the techniques and time pressures by preparing and exchanging contract proposals. Bargaining teams prepare contract positions and potential language is exchanged in mock labor-management bargaining sessions. Probelm solving and interest based bargaining techniques will be presented.
