Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When does the J.A.T.C. take applications?
A: Inside program: 1st Wednesday in January, April, July and October, between 8:30am to 4pm.
Residential program: Every Thursday, between 2pm and 4pm.
Sound and Communications program: Every Thursday, between 2pm and 4pm.
Q: What are the requirements?
A: Inside program: High school graduate, or GED, or in lieu of a high school diploma or GED, a two-year Associate Degree or higher. One full credit of high school algebra with a C or better, or post high school algebra course (e.g. Adult Ed, Continuing Ed, Community College, etc.) with a C or better, or provide evidence of having completed the NJATC Math Course. All transcripts must be submitted.

Q: When can an applicant start work?
A: For all programs: An applicant starts work when the industry needs apprentices.
Q: What are the procedures?
A: For all programs: An interested party must first apply for the program that appeals to them. When there are enough applicants, the J.A.T.C. will host a test, (there is a sample test on the web at, www.njatc.org,) after the testing process, the applicant is scheduled for an interview, then depending on the outcome of the interview; he or she may be slotted into the standing waiting list. When the need for a class arises, the applicants are chosen from top of the list.
Q: Does the apprentice get paid while working and going to school?
A: For all programs: If or when an applicant is accepted into one of the programs, they are dispatched to one of our employers as an apprentice. While working on the job, he or she will have to attend classes at the J.A.T.C. The apprentice will be paid for his time on the job.
Q: Does the apprentice have to pay for attending the apprenticeship school?
A: For all programs: There is no tuition cost to the apprentice, except the cost of the books.
Q: How long are the programs?
A: Inside program: Five (5) years, 980 school hours (196 hours per year), and 8000 hours on the job training.
Residential program: Three (3) years, 480 school hours (160 hours per year), and 4800 hours on the job training.
Sound and Communications program: Three (3) years, 480 school hours (160 hours per year), and 4800 hours on the job training.
Q: When is the J.A.T.C. open?
A: The J.A.T.C. is open daily, except for holidays:
Monday 7:30 am to 5:00 pm
Tuesday 7:30 am to 5:00 pm
Wednesday 7:30 am to 5:00 pm
Thursday 7:30 am to 5:00 pm
Friday 7:30 am to 3:00 pm
Closed for lunch between 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm
Q: What are the school hours?
A: For all programs: Class hours are from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm for night school, and 7:30 am to 3:40 pm for day school.
